Bakersfield, CA. – A patient in an ambulance died in a crash on Wednesday afternoon in Bakersfield.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened on Interstate 5 near Grapevine Road at around 9:14 a.m.
Caltrans crews were working at the scene of a semi-truck fire that had reduced traffic to one open lane on I-5 near the escape ramp when an ambulance transporting a patient crashed into the back of a Caltrans vehicle.
A medical helicopter was requested to airlift the patient to the hospital, but the patient died before the air ambulance arrived.
A Caltrans worker involved in the crash reported a complaint of pain.
More details on the accident were not released.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
