San Bernardino, CA. – Elvira Nemenzo, 66, has been identified as the Madera woman who died in a car accident that left four others injured in Newberry Springs.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 12:10 p.m. on northbound Interstate 15, south of Harvard Road.

A Toyota vehicle and a silver Nissan hatchback were involved in the crash. Both vehicles came to rest in the center divider.

Nemenzo was trapped inside the Nissan and had to be extricated by firefighters. Sadly, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

A rear passenger, identified as Charmaine Smith, 47, and a front-seat juvenile passenger, Adrian House, 10, both suffered critical injuries and were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment.

A third patient with serious injuries was transported by ground ambulance to Barstow Community Hospital, where they were airlifted to another trauma center. A fourth person was also injured in the crash.

Interstate 15 was briefly closed in both directions as emergency personnel worked at the scene. The shutdown caused extensive traffic delays, with congestion stretching for miles as holiday travelers returned from Las Vegas following the Fourth of July weekend.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
