Emergency crews found one occupant trapped inside the Nissan hatchback. Despite rescue efforts, the victim, a 66-year-old Madera woman, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 1:00 p.m. and had to be extricated from the vehicle. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
A rear passenger, identified as Charmaine Smith, 47, and a front-seat juvenile passenger, Adrian House, 10, both suffered critical injuries and were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment.
A third patient with serious injuries was transported by ground ambulance to Barstow Community Hospital, where they were airlifted to another trauma center. A fourth person was also injured in the crash.
Interstate 15 was briefly closed in both directions as emergency personnel worked at the scene. The shutdown caused extensive traffic delays, with congestion stretching for miles as holiday travelers returned from Las Vegas following the Fourth of July weekend.
