San Diego, CA – One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in San Diego late Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:40 p.m. on northbound Interstate 5 near Clairemont Drive and Mission Bay Drive.
Preliminary information indicates the crash involved two vehicles. One of the vehicles traveled off the right side of the freeway and down an embankment. Reports from the scene indicated that one occupant was pinned inside a vehicle against the steering wheel and dashboard while the vehicle began to smoke. Emergency responders were dispatched to assist.
One person suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin. Information regarding injuries to occupants of the second vehicle was not immediately available.
California Highway Patrol officers, San Diego Police Department personnel, and other emergency responders responded to the scene and conducted rescue and recovery operations. Tow crews were later called to remove the damaged vehicles.
Northbound Interstate 5 was shut down under the Clairemont Drive bridge as investigators processed the scene and cleared the wreckage.
The cause of the two-vehicle collision has not been determined. Investigators have not released details regarding the circumstances that caused one of the vehicles to leave the roadway.
