Ventura, CA – One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash involving a vehicle fire on U.S. Highway 101 in Ventura late Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 10:53 p.m. on Monday, June 8, on southbound Highway 101 just north of the California Street on-ramp.
As per the CHP, a tan Chevrolet Tahoe and a gray Volvo sedan were involved in the collision. The Tahoe reportedly went off the roadway and down an embankment before catching fire. One person was to be trapped inside the burning vehicle
The Ventura County Coroner was called to the scene after the driver was found deceased inside the burnt vehicle. Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim. It was not immediately clear whether there were additional injuries.
Firefighters responded to extinguish the blaze and assist with the recovery operation. Authorities also requested extraction assistance at the scene due to the severity of the crash and fire damage.
The collision forced the closure of lanes two and three of southbound Highway 101 near California Street, causing traffic disruptions in the area while crews investigated and cleared the wreckage.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
