Guerneville, CA – The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office identified the pedestrian who died after she was struck by a car Tuesday afternoon at an intersection in Guerneville.
The victim was 86-year-old Gwen Simmerman of Lake Stevens, Washington.
According to the California Highway Patrol – Santa Rosa Office, the accident occurred around 1:50 p.m. on May 5 at Armstrong Woods Road and Highway 116.
According to investigators, Darin Dempsey, 61, of Guerneville, was driving a Dodge Ram traveling north on First Street when he turned left onto Highway 116.
The vehicle struck Simmerman as she was crossing the street after activating the crosswalk signal.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported the pedestrian to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where she later died Tuesday night.
Authorities arrested Dempsey after establishing that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol. He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of DUI and additional charges.

Guerneville, CA – A pedestrian was killed in a crash involving a suspected impaired driver at an intersection in Guerneville Tuesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The pedestrian accident happened at about 1:50 p.m. on May 5 at Armstrong Woods Road and Highway 116.
Investigators said a Dodge Ram traveling northbound on First Street turned left onto Highway 116 and struck a pedestrian who was crossing the roadway. Authorities said the pedestrian crosswalk signal had been activated prior to the collision.
The victim sustained major injuries and was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where the pedestrian later died Tuesday night. The identity of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and additional related charges.
Authorities believe impairment was a contributing factor in the crash.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and provided medical aid before transporting the injured pedestrian to the hospital.
The collision caused disruptions in the area surrounding Highway 116 and Armstrong Woods Road as officers conducted their investigation.
