Turlock, CA – A 67-year-old man died at the scene of an accident that left him pinned inside a vehicle on Friday afternoon in Turlock.

According to the Turlock Police Department, the accident was reported at around 3:45 p.m. March 6, in the 1300 block of South Washington Road near West Linwood Avenue.

Preliminary reports indicate that two vehicles collided in the area and one person was trapped in the wreckage. Reasons as to why the vehicles crashed were not immediately released.

The Turlock police and Turlock Fire Department crews responded to the scene shortly after and helped extricate the trapped driver. The vehicles were found with major damage due to the impact of the crash.

Medics tried to give CPR to the extricated driver but he succumbed to his injuries at scene. He was later identified as Jose Blancas, 67.

The second driver remained at the scene and was treated for minor injuries.

It’s unclear whether driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs factored in the accident.

The Turlock Police Department is still investigating to determine what caused the collision. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact 209-668-6537.

In 2023, Turlock reported 399 victims killed or injured in fatal and injury collisions, placing it 19th out of 103 similarly sized California cities, indicating a relatively high serious crash burden locally. Alcohol-involved collisions accounted for 39 victims, with drivers aged 21–34 contributing a large share. Speed-related collisions involved 44 victims, while 34 occurred at night (9 pm–2:59 am) — a period associated with impaired and unsafe driving. Vulnerable road user involvement included 20 pedestrians and 26 bicyclists killed or injured, with 7 child pedestrian victims, ranking 2nd statewide in that subset. Hit-and-run collisions resulted in 27 serious injury victims. Compared with 2022, when total serious collision victims were 422, the 2023 count shows a modest decline, though Turlock’s ranking remained in the upper tier among peers. These figures illustrate persistent traffic safety challenges, including alcohol, speed, and nighttime factors.
