80-Year-Old Woman Dies in Stanislaus County Crash on Gratton Road and East Avenue

Stanislaus County, CA – An elderly woman was killed when a vehicle she was riding in was broadsided at an intersection in Stanislaus County on Tuesday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the wreck happened at around 5:30 p.m. March 24, on Gratton Road and East Avenue, nearly three miles east of Turlock.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 16-year-old El Dorado Hills girl was driving a pickup truck southbound on Gratton Road when she failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection and broadsided a Honda sedan.

Authorities reported that an 80-year-old Delhi woman, who was a passenger in the sedan, was taken to a hospital, where she was declared deceased. The driver of the sedan, a 76-year-old Delhi man, was transported to Memorial Medical Center with serious injuries.

The teenage driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene while her passenger, a 77-year-old Winton man, was not injured.

All involved parties were wearing their seatbelts and impairment was not suspected in the incident, according to the CHP.

Tha cause of the collision is under investigation by the CHP and further details are expected to be released.

In 2023, Turlock reported 399 victims killed or injured in fatal and injury collisions, placing it 19th out of 103 similarly sized California cities, indicating a relatively high serious crash burden locally. Alcohol-involved collisions accounted for 39 victims, with drivers aged 21–34 contributing a large share. Speed-related collisions involved 44 victims, while 34 occurred at night (9 pm–2:59 am) — a period associated with impaired and unsafe driving. Vulnerable road user involvement included 20 pedestrians and 26 bicyclists killed or injured, with 7 child pedestrian victims, ranking 2nd statewide in that subset. Hit-and-run collisions resulted in 27 serious injury victims. Compared with 2022, when total serious collision victims were 422, the 2023 count shows a modest decline, though Turlock’s ranking remained in the upper tier among peers. These figures illustrate persistent traffic safety challenges, including alcohol, speed, and nighttime factors.
