According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, motorcycle fatalities in Georgia reached a record high of 221 in 2022, with roughly 42% of all state crashes occurring in the Metro Atlanta region.
Fatalities remain highly concentrated in Fulton and DeKalb counties. NHTSA data indicate that speeding (35%) and alcohol impairment (30%) are the leading causes of fatal incidents. Furthermore, over 50% of riders involved in fatal crashes lacked a valid motorcycle license. While Georgia maintains an 88% helmet compliance rate, motorcyclists still account for 18% of total traffic deaths despite representing less than 1% of registered vehicles. In response, Atlanta has integrated motorcycle-specific safety targets into its 2026 Vision Zero strategy, focusing on high-risk corridors like Peachtree Street and urban arterials.
