San Mateo County, CA – A fatal two-vehicle collision left one person dead and another seriously injured on State Route 1 in San Mateo County late Monday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred on southbound SR-1 just north of Capistrano Road at approximately 6:29 p.m. on February 2, when responders were dispatched to reports of a major collision.

Traffic was backed up as both northbound and southbound lanes were initially closed due to the severity of the incident.

Preliminary details from CHP indicate the crash was a head-on collision involving a dark minivan that “swerved out of its lane” and struck a white pickup truck. Multiple vehicles came to a stop at the scene, and bystanders stopped to assist as emergency crews were notified of the collision.

The impact left one person unresponsive at the scene, and another party was reported with major injuries.

Authorities confirmed that one individual died as a result of the crash, while a second victim was seriously injured and later transported for advanced medical care.

No arrests have been reported in the CHP updates. At this time, CHP has not released an official cause for why the minivan exited its lane or other contributing factors to the head-on collision, and investigators continue to examine the circumstances.

Emergency responders from San Mateo County Fire and other agencies arrived on scene, requested life-flight services with an ETA of approximately 17 minutes, and provided urgent medical attention to the injured parties before transporting them to hospitals.

The collision forced the closure of both northbound and southbound SR-1 just north of Capistrano Road for several hours, prompting a SIG Alert and significant delays as crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the scene.

The fatal collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, with authorities working to determine all factors that led to the head-on crash.
