Phoenix experiences a high volume of traffic collisions and ranks as one of the deadliest major cities in the U.S. for traffic fatalities. According to the preliminary 2024 Arizona Crash Facts Summary, Phoenix recorded 37,472 total crashes, which averages out to over 102 incidents per day. These crashes resulted in 265 fatalities and more than 10,449 injuries within the year. Phoenix consistently accounts for a significant portion of all crashes and traffic deaths in Maricopa County and the state of Arizona. Â The primary contributing factors to collisions in Phoenix include speeding (a factor in over 30% of crashes), distracted driving (around 28%), and driving under the influence (DUI). Lack of seatbelt usage is also a major concern, as unbelted occupants are significantly more likely to die in a crash than those who are buckled up. High-risk areas for accidents often cluster around major freeway interchanges like the I-10 and I-17, as well as busy intersections such as 7th Avenue and Indian School Road.
