Wickenberg, AZ– Two people were injured in a collision involving two trucks on US 93 north of Wickenberg early Monday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The incident took place just before 6 a.m. January 12, at Santa Maria Road near milepost 164.

According to the AZDPS, a box truck and a tractor-trailer were involved in the wreck in the northbound lanes of US 93. The report did not indicate how and why the vehicles collided.

The DPS troopers and emergency fire crews arrived shortly after and attended to the two motorists. The two were evaluated by medics and were determined to have sustained major injuries.

The two patients were airlifted to area hospitals and an update on their conditions was not available.

As authorities conducted on-scene investigations and cleared the scene, both directions of US 93 were shut down. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, all lanes had reopened by noon.

Investigators are still working to find out exactly what led up to the collision.

Phoenix continues to experience a high volume of vehicle collisions, consistently accounting for a disproportionate share of Arizona’s total crashes and fatalities, though recent preliminary data shows a slight decline in fatal crashes in 2024. The city logged 37,472 crashes in 2024, which translates to an average of over 102 accidents per day. In 2022, Phoenix recorded 38,311 total crashes, resulting in 282 fatalities and over 10,000 personal injuries. The city is ranked as one of the deadliest major cities in the US for traffic fatalities per capita.  Key contributing factors in Phoenix crashes include speeding, which is a factor in approximately 34% of deadly crashes, and distracted driving. Alcohol-related incidents also remain a concern, particularly on weekend nights. Pedestrians and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable; pedestrian collisions resulted in 249 deaths in Arizona in 2024, while motorcycle fatalities account for 20% of all fatal crashes in Phoenix.
