Los Gatos, CA – The California Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly car accident that occurred on Highway 27 in Los Gatos early Friday morning.
At around 12:30 a.m. December 19, authorities received reports of a collision in the area of Highway 27 south of Lark Avenue.
According to CHP, a Tesla traveling in the northbound side of the highway lost control, drifted off the side, and crashed down the embankment. The Tesla then burst into flames and the fire spread into nearby vegetation.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle at time of the accident. The unidentified driver died in the wreck.
Following the accident, the northbound lanes of Highway 27, just south of Lark Avenue were shut down and drivers were advised to find alternative routes.
The California Highway Patrol is working to determine what caused the accident.
In 2022, Los Gatos had a total of 71 victims killed and injured in reported traffic collisions. The town’s overall safety ranking for fatal and injury crashes placed it 76th out of 90 comparable cities in California, as reported by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). A breakdown of the data indicates that bicyclist-involved collisions were a notable concern, with 16 victims injured or killed, resulting in a low safety ranking of 11th out of 90 cities. Pedestrian-related collisions accounted for eight victims, and alcohol-involved crashes led to four injuries or deaths during the same period.
