San Diego, CA. – A 53-year-old man was left with life-threatening injuries after losing control of his electric scooter and crashing Thursday evening near Balboa Park, authorities reported.

The crash occurred around 5:49 p.m. on the 1200 block of Pershing Drive.

Police said the man was riding an electric scooter when he veered to the right for unknown reasons, left the roadway, and struck a patch of dirt, causing him to fall.

The rider sustained multiple serious injuries, including a brain bleed, fractured ribs, cheek, clavicle, and scapula, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Authorities are investigating what caused the man to lose control.
