San Diego, CA.- The California Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly collision that occurred in the College Area neighborhood on Monday night.
The wreck happened at about 10:40 p.m. October 20, on Interstate 8 near Waring Road.
A vehicle traveling eastbound on I-40 lost control and overturned in the roadway.
The disabled car was then hit by another vehicle.
A La Mesa police officer pulled over at the scene to assist the parties involved in the crash but the officer was hit by a third vehicle.
A fourth car then crashed into the disabled vehicles.
The officer and one of the drivers were killed in the incident.
Several other parties were hospitalized with unspecified injuries.
All eastbound lanes of I-8 were shut down between College Avenue and Fairmount Avenue following the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
