Santa Clara, CA – Two drivers died in a fiery wrong-way crash that happened Wednesday on Montague Expressway, the Santa Clara Police Department reported.
The wreck happened at Lafayette Street involving a GMC SUV and a silver Honda pickup truck.
According to police, a man was driving the SUV in the wrong direction at a high rate of speed when he collided with the pickup truck, driven in the right direction by another man.
The SUV overturned onto its side and caught fire.
Police initially reported on Wednesday that at least one person died in the collision, but on Thursday they updated that both drivers, only identified as men, were killed in the accident.
One of the drivers had to be extricated from the wreckage.

Santa Clara, CA – At least one person died in a fiery wrong-way collision that happened Wednesday on Montague Expressway in Santa Clara, authorities reported.
According to the Santa Clara Police Department, the accident involved at least two vehicles on the Montague Expressway overcrossing at Lafayette Street on August 26, 2026.
Police officers and firefighters responded to the scene and found one of the vehicles in flames and one person trapped inside the other car.
The firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free the trapped victim.
At least one person died in the accident.
One of the vehicles was allegedly driving in the wrong direction at a high rate of speed prior to the crash.
Santa Clara police closed Montague Expressway in both directions following the accident.
