Rebecca Gonzales Killed in Tucson Pedestrian Crash on West Valencia Road

Tucson, AZ – A 34-year-old woman was killed in an auto-pedestrian collision that happened last week on Friday on Tucson’s Southwest side, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

The accident happened on West Valencia Road near Camino del Sol at around 8 p.m. on Friday, January 9.

According to the PCSD, Rebecca Gonzales, 34, was standing in the roadway when she was struck by two westbound vehicles. The two drivers stayed at the scene after striking the pedestrian and rendered aid to the victim.

A third vehicle, believed to be a lifted truck with large chrome wheels, also hit the pedestrian but the driver did not stop.

The PCSD deputies and firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after and Gonzales was decleared deceased at the scene.

Authorities said the drivers who remained at the scene cooperated with the investigators and were not suspected of speeding or DUI.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an ongoing investigation into the collision.

Arizona experienced a slight decline in traffic incidents over the past two years, though crash fatalities remain high. In 2023, the state reported 122,247 total motor-vehicle crashes with 1,307 deaths, while 2024 saw a small decrease to 121,107 crashes and 1,228 fatalities, representing a 6.1% drop in deaths compared with the previous year. Despite the modest improvement, the number of serious injuries and fatalities remains near historically high levels, highlighting ongoing road safety challenges. Speeding, impaired driving, and failure to use safety devices continue to be major contributing factors in fatal and serious crashes across the state. Emergency response efforts and public safety campaigns aim to reduce these risks, but Arizona’s highways and urban roads continue to see a significant number of severe accidents annually.
