Thousand Palms, CA – One person is dead following a crash between big rigs on Interstate 10 in Thousand Palms on Tuesday morning, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.
At around 7:50 a.m. April 14, authorities were called to the scene of a collision west of Washington Street.
Investigators determined that a big rig was traveling east on I-10 when it moved to the left of the highway and slammed into multiple vehicles. The big rig then crashed through the guardrail and center median, ending up on the westbound side of I-10.
The big rig collided with a cement truck and a Jeep traveling west on the interstate.
CHP and the Riverside County Fire Department responded to the scene and attended to multiple parties involved in the accident.
The driver of the cement truck was declared dead at the scene. The driver’s identity was not released by the authorities.
The operator of the big rig was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment of unspecified injuries. Six people were treated by medics at the scene.
The crash led to the closure of the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-10 for nearly four hours as authorities investigated and cleared the scene.
An investigation to determine the cause of the accident is being conducted by the California Highway Patrol.
