San Luis Obispo, CA – One driver was killed and another was injured following a late-night crash on Highway 101 near Pismo Beach on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred on southbound Highway 101, just south of San Luis Bay Drive at about 11:53 p.m. on June 23.
Investigators said a 2020 Toyota Tacoma, occupied by a 27-year-old man, was traveling southbound when it left the roadway into an embankment and rolled onto the roadway. The pickup came to rest on its roof in the No. 1 lane, sustaining major damage.
A short time later, a southbound 1991 BMW 535i, driven by a 73-year-old man, collided with the overturned Tacoma. Authorities said the BMW driver was traveling at 65 mph and did not see the overturned vehicle, leading to the collision
The 27-year-old driver of the Toyota suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at about 12:20 a.m. Wednesday at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.
The BMW driver sustained minor to moderate injuries in the crash. Investigators reported that he showed no signs of impairment.
Officials said it remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the events leading up to the Tacoma’s rollover.
The crash prompted a temporary diversion of southbound traffic at San Luis Bay Drive while crews investigated and cleared the scene. All lanes reopened at approximately 2 a.m.
The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the fatal collision.
