30-Year-Old Man Killed in Seattle Pedestrian Crash on Interstate 5 near Yesler Way

Seattle, WA.- A man was hit and killed by a vehicle while attempting to walk across Interstate 5 in downtown Seattle early Wednesday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol. I-5 was shut down for nearly three hours following the collision.

The incident happened at about 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, in the westbound lanes of the interstate near Yesler Way.

According to the WSP, a 30-year-old man from Seattle was attempting to walk from the right shoulder of the interstate to the left when he was struck by a Toyota Prius. The vehicle was driven by a 48-year-old.

The pedestrian was killed in the crash. His name was not immediately released by the authorities. The driver was injured in the accident and was treated at the scene.

The Washington State Patrol is conducting an investigation into the collision.

In Washington, drivers are required by law to exercise due care to avoid collisions with pedestrians. Pedestrians walking in marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections have the right of way. Furthermore, pedestrians attempting to cross outside of the crosswalks must yield to vehicles to avoid being hit. Pedestrians should also walk facing traffic when walking on a roadway that lacks a sidewalk. These laws are put into consideration when determining fault and liability in cases of pedestrian accidents.
