The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m., December 30, in the eastbound lanes of Highway 154 near Windy Gap, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Fire officials said the sedan left the roadway and ended up approximately 150 feet down an embankment.

The woman, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, remained trapped down the embankment following the crash.

Firefighters used a rope rescue system to safely reach the vehicle and bring the injured driver back up to the roadway. She sustained minor to moderate injuries and was transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.

The woman’s identity and additional details about her condition were not immediately released.

As a result of the crash, Highway 154 was temporarily shut down in both directions near Windy Gap, forcing motorists to take alternate routes. Officials said the closure was expected to last about an hour while emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
