San Luis Obispo County, CA – One person was killed following a head-on collision on Highway 46 near Paso Robles on Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:38 a.m. on State Route 46, about five miles east of Highway 1.

CHP logs indicate the collision involved a white Dodge Ram pickup truck towing an RV-style trailer and a gray Ford Mustang. Authorities reported the vehicles collided head-on, blocking both directions of traffic. Investigators later stated the Dodge Ram and trailer remained in the roadway while the Mustang sustained major damage. The vehicle was also reported to be smoking following the collision.

At least one person was killed in the San Luis Obispo County crash. Authorities said both occupants of the Dodge Ram were able to exit their vehicle following the collision. Information regarding additional injuries or possible arrests was not immediately available.

Emergency crews, including Cal Fire, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and air support personnel, responded to the scene shortly after the collision was reported. Tow trucks were later requested to remove the damaged vehicles and trailer from the highway.

The collision caused major traffic disruptions in the area as the highway was blocked completely in both directions. CHP issued a SigAlert at about 10:52 a.m. for two hours and traffic was diverted while investigators processed the scene and crews cleared the roadway. All lanes reopened at approximately 1:24 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
