San Diego, CA – The 12-year-old boy who suffered critical injuries earlier this month after he was struck by a Tesla while riding an e-bike near a San Diego intersection has been identified.
Mark Maldonado remained in a medically induced coma after the crash that happened around 5:40 p.m. on May 2 at Del Mar Heights Road and Old Carmel Valley Road.
According to San Diego police, Maldonado was riding an e-bike westbound in the bike lane on Del Mar Heights Road, and a 64-year-old man was driving a 2023 Tesla Model Y in the same direction.
Maldonado attempted to turn left from the bike lane onto Old Carmel Valley Road and was hit by the front passenger side of the Tesla.
The boy was thrown into the air, hit the windshield of the car, causing his helmet to come off, before he landed on the ground.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported Maldonado to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, including head trauma and a broken clavicle. Maldonado underwent surgery and remained in a medically induced coma as of Friday last week.
The boy is a student at Ashley Falls Elementary. A GoFundMe page was created to help raise funds to cover his medical bills, cost of food, and other necessities.

San Diego, CA. – A 12-year-old boy was seriously injured after being struck by a car as he rode an e-bike in San Diego on Saturday evening.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the accident happened around 5:40 p.m. on Del Mar Heights Road at Old Carmel Valley Road.
The 12-year-old was riding the e-bike westbound in the bike lane of Del Mar Heights Road when he attempted to make a left-hand-turn onto Old Carmel Valley when he was struck by the front passenger side of a 2023 Tesla Model Y driven by a 64-year-old man.
The boy suffered life-threatening injuries including multiple brain bleeds that required surgery, in addition to a fractured clavicle.
Alcohol was reportedly not a factor in the crash.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
