Pedestrian safety in Sacramento remains a major concern, with the city consistently ranking among the most dangerous in California for those on foot. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Sacramento recently ranked 4th worst out of 15 large cities for pedestrian victims. In 2023, the city recorded 297 fatal and injury pedestrian incidents, contributing to a county-wide death toll that has historically been the fourth highest in the state.
NHTSA and local data indicate that nearly 77% of fatal pedestrian crashes occur after dark, often on high-speed arterials like Florin Road and Watt Avenue. A significant 2025-2026 trend shows that while overall fatalities are dipping, pedestrian deaths still account for a disproportionate 50% of traffic fatalities in the urban core.
