A preliminary investigation found that a freight train was heading north on the Union Pacific mainline when it struck a man who tried to walk across the tracks
Redding, CA – An investigation is underway after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a freight train on Union Pacific Railroad in Redding on Monday afternoon.
The Redding Police Department reported that officers responded at around 4:50 p.m. December 29, to the railroad crossing, south of Highway 273 and S. Bonnyview Road, regarding a train vs pedestrian collision.
A preliminary investigation found that a freight train was heading north on the Union Pacific mainline when it struck a man who tried to walk across the tracks.
The Redding police and Shasta County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene to investigate the tragic incident.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the site of the crash. His name was withheld pending notification of the next-of-kin.
There were no other injuries reported in the incident.
It’s unclear why the pedestrian was on the train tracks. The incident remains under investigation.
