Woman Critically Injured in Phoenix Pedestrian Crash on 75th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard

Phoenix, AZ – A woman was hospitalized with major injuries after being struck by a vehicle in west Phoenix late Thursday night, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Shortly after 10 p.m. February 12, authorities responded to reports of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian at 75th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard.

Authorities reported that a vehicle struck a woman in the area near the Desert Sky Mall. It’s unclear whether the woman was in a marked or unmarked crosswalk when the accident happened.

When the PPD and the emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found the pedestrian suffering from major injuries.

Medics rushed the woman to a hospital, and she was listed in critical condition. Her identity was not released in the police report.

The driver was at the scene when authorities arrived and was not suspected to have been impaired.

At this time, the Phoenix Police Department is still gathering more information to establish the exact cause of the accident.

Phoenix continues to experience a high volume of vehicle collisions, consistently accounting for a disproportionate share of Arizona’s total crashes and fatalities, though recent preliminary data shows a slight decline in fatal crashes in 2024. The city logged 37,472 crashes in 2024, which translates to an average of over 102 accidents per day. In 2022, Phoenix recorded 38,311 total crashes, resulting in 282 fatalities and over 10,000 personal injuries. The city is ranked as one of the deadliest major cities in the US for traffic fatalities per capita.  Key contributing factors in Phoenix crashes include speeding, which is a factor in approximately 34% of deadly crashes, and distracted driving. Alcohol-related incidents also remain a concern, particularly on weekend nights. Pedestrians and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable; pedestrian collisions resulted in 249 deaths in Arizona in 2024, while motorcycle fatalities account for 20% of all fatal crashes in Phoenix.
