Phoenix, AZ – Phoenix, AZ – Authorities have identified the 76-year-old woman who died in a five-vehicle chain-reaction crash near an intersection in Phoenix on Thursday night.
Police identified the victim as Frances Homer. She was taken to a hospital by Phoenix Fire personnel after the crash but later died from her injuries.
One driver, identified as 18-year-old Jeffrey Daniel White, has also been arrested in connection with the collision.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:10 p.m. near 19th Avenue and Evans Drive on October 29.
Police said several vehicles were stopped behind a city bus while passengers were getting off. Investigators said the chain-reaction collision began when a gray Volvo SUV driven by White struck the rear of a white Dodge Ram pickup at high speed. The impact triggered a series of collisions involving five vehicles. Reportedly, one vehicle left the roadway, crossed a sidewalk, and struck a small brick wall. The driver, later identified as Frances Homer, was taken to a hospital by Phoenix Fire personnel, where she was pronounced dead.
Three other drivers, ages 33, 45, and 26, were not injured and remained at the scene.
Police said White attempted to flee on foot after the crash but was detained by witnesses. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A Drug Recognition Expert later evaluated him and reportedly observed signs of impairment.
While receiving treatment, White allegedly kicked an officer in the face. Officers arrested him on an aggravated assault charge.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police say additional allegations may be filed.
