In 2023, speeding was a major contributor to traffic deaths in California, accounting for about 32 % of all motor vehicle fatalities in the state — roughly 1,303 deaths where speed was a primary or contributing factor. This represents a nearly 10 % decline from the previous year's total, although it remains a substantial portion of statewide traffic fatalities. Unsafe speed itself was the most common primary crash factor in these fatal and serious injury collisions, involved in about 73.7 % of cases, followed by alcohol or drug impairment (14 %) and improper turning (3.8 %). Rear-end collisions were the leading crash type in speeding-related fatal and serious injury crashes, followed by hitting fixed objects and broadside impacts. Males, especially ages 15–34, were disproportionately represented among victims. Speed-related fatal crashes peaked in late evening and early overnight hours, reflecting higher risk during those periods.
