Sylmar, CA. – One person died in a single-car collision that also sparked a brush fire consuming several acres of vegetation Tuesday afternoon in Sylmar.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident was reported around 3:14 p.m. on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway north of the San Diego (405) Freeway.
A car veered off the freeway, ending up in a nearby brush.
The driver of the vehicle died in the crash.
The crash sparked a brush fire that consumed about 7 acres of vegetation before being fully contained around 4:20 p.m.
Authorities said about 1 acre of vegetation on the other side of the freeway was also consumed after the fire jumped over to that side.
It was unclear if the deceased was fatally injured in the collision or was consumed by the fire.
Authorities are investigating the accident.
Another crash involving a motorcycle occured near the same area Wednesday morning, leaving one person with major injuries.
