Oakland has experienced persistently and unacceptably high traffic fatalities, a trend the city describes as a “public safety epidemic”. In 2022, Oakland recorded a record high of 36 traffic deaths. While state-level preliminary data for California in 2025 has shown a significant decrease in motor vehicle deaths overall, specific Oakland data for that exact period is not yet detailed. The city’s crash trends are heavily concentrated on a small portion of its infrastructure, with just 6% to 8% of streets (known as the High Injury Network) accounting for over 60% of severe and fatal collisions. These crashes disproportionately impact the city’s Priority Equity communities.  The leading causes of these severe and fatal crashes in Oakland are consistent with state and national trends, primarily involving preventable driver behaviors. Key contributing factors include speeding, which is at the root of about 25% of deadly crashes, failure to yield to pedestrians, running red lights and stop signs, and unsafe turning (especially left turns). Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and distracted driving also remain persistent issues.

In the event of a bicycle accident, the cyclist is often vulnerable to catastrophic injuries and even death. Speeding, drunk driving, and failure to yield the right of way by motorists are some of the potential causes of bicycle accidents.
