Traffic collision patterns in Oakland reflect both persistent risks and some variation in serious outcomes over time. According to California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) crash rankings, the city’s total fatal and injury collision victims were 1,963 in 2021, increased to 2,153 in 2022, then declined modestly to 2,013 in 2023, shifting Oakland’s relative statewide ranking from 6th in 2021 to 7th in 2023 among similarly sized cities. Pedestrian victims remained consistently high through this period, with 217 in 2021, 262 in 2022, and 255 in 2023, marking pedestrians as a persistent share of serious collisions. Motorcycle and alcohol-involved victims also showed year-to-year fluctuation, while bicyclist counts declined from 132 to 100 over the same span.
