Los Angeles continues to face a significant challenge with traffic safety, with hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injuries reported annually. In 2024, the City of Los Angeles recorded 302 traffic-related deaths, a 12.5% decrease from 2023, but still a higher number than pre-pandemic years and more than the number of homicides in the city. In 2023, the city saw 336 traffic fatalities, the highest total in over 20 years. Pedestrians remain the most vulnerable road users, accounting for a majority of the deaths; for example, in 2023, 179 of the 336 fatalities were pedestrians. In 2024, more than 1,360 pedestrian-involved crashes were reported. The city’s “Vision Zero” initiative, which aimed to eliminate traffic deaths by 2025, has not succeeded in its goal, with fatalities and severe injuries largely increasing since its inception in 2015. Key contributing factors to these collisions consistently include speeding, impaired driving (alcohol and drugs), and hit-and-run incidents, which have surged in recent years. The most dangerous periods for crashes are typically weekday afternoons between 3 PM and 6 PM, with Downtown LA and South Los Angeles being among the areas with the highest accident rates.
