Newport Beach, CA – A driver traveling the wrong way on the 73 Freeway in Newport Beach caused a crash that sent three people to a hospital on Friday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 8:05 p.m. January 23, authorities received reports of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway near Greenfield Drive in Laguna Niguel.
The wrong-way driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle collided with a second car south of Bonita Canyon Road at around 8:16 p.m.
The CHP officers and firefighters responded to the site of the collision shortly after. Three people were transported to a hospital with major injuries.
According to the report, the vehicle traveling the wrong way was registered to a missing Cypress resident. There were no confirmed arrests in connection with the accident.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating to determine the cause the crash.
