Mesa, AZ – A woman was killed and five other people injured early Wednesday after a suspected impaired driver crashed into two vehicles stopped along U.S. 60 in Mesa, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Authorities said two vehicles had stopped on the right side of the freeway while their occupants worked to change a flat tire.
As the vehicles were preparing to leave, a third vehicle struck both of them, causing the multi-vehicle collision.
One woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Five other people were treated for injuries, including the suspected at-fault driver, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators suspect impairment was a factor for the driver who struck the two stopped vehicles. No information was immediately provided about possible charges.
The eastbound lanes of US 60 and the eastbound on-ramp from Higley Road were closed during the early morning investigation. Both reopened shortly before 7 a.m., while westbound traffic was not affected.
The fatal Mesa crash is being investigated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Vehicle Crimes Unit.
