According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported at around 5:05 p.m. on the southbound State Route 101 just north of Whipple Avenue.
The police said seven vehicles were involved in the mishap. However, the manner in which they collided was not immediately established.
At least one person suffered severe injuries.
