Head-on collisions in Kern County represent a smaller share of total crashes but tend to be highly severe when they occur. According to a Kern County Local Road Safety Plan using California Highway Patrol SWITRS data, head-on crashes account for about 3 % of all reported collisions in the county, behind broadside, rear-end, and hit-object collisions in frequency. These head-on impacts typically involve a vehicle crossing a center line or wrong-way travel on two-lane rural highways and urban arterials, often at higher speeds, increasing the likelihood of fatalities and serious injuries. Historical CHP-reported summaries indicate that in earlier years, Kern County recorded over 200 head-on collisions with dozens of injuries and multiple deaths in some reporting periods, emphasizing the disproportionate severity relative to their frequency. Contributing factors include unsafe passing maneuvers, driver distraction, and impaired or fatigued driving, common elements in head-on crash causation statewide. These collisions are prioritized in local safety planning due to the high risk to vehicle occupants once a head-on impact occurs.
