Lance Erskine among 2 Killed in Suspected DUI Collision on 5 Freeway in Santa Fe Springs

Santa Fe Springs, Calif. –  The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has identified one of the two men killed in a suspected DUI crash in Santa Fe Springs as Lance Paul Erskine, 20, of Fountain Valley.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Landon Hazelwood, 19, of Garden Grove veered his Honda Accord and crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer at about 1:39 a.m. on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway just north of Carmenita Road.

Lance Erskine and a second passenger sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the second passenger was withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Hazelwood was transported to the hospital and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Santa Fe Springs, Calif. – Two men are dead, and a DUI suspect was arrested after a traffic collision involving a car and a big rig that happened early Tuesday morning in Santa Fe Springs.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 1:39 a.m. on the southbound 5 Freeway just north of Carmenita Road.

CHP said the driver of a Honda Accord drifted onto the shoulder and crashed into the back of a stopped big rig. It was not clear why the big rig was stopped.

The Honda was occupied by three men at the time of the collision.

Two men riding as passengers in the Honda were pronounced dead at the scene. One of them was found outside the car.

The driver of the car was taken to an ambulance conscious and speaking, and transported to UCI with unspecified injuries. He was also arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

All southbound lanes of the freeway at Carmenita Road were shut down following the accident.
