Police reported that a Cherriots bus was traveling west on Union Street when it tried to make a right turn onto northbound High Street and collided with a pedestrian in the crosswalk

Salem, OR.– A pedestrian was hit and killed by a bus on Wednesday afternoon in downtown Salem, according to the Salem Police Department.
The incident took place on Union and High Streets Northeast at about 1 p.m. January 22.
Police reported that a Cherriots bus was traveling west on Union Street when it tried to make a right turn onto northbound High Street and collided with a pedestrian in the crosswalk.
Despite life-saving measures performed by witnesses on the pedestrian, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
He was identified as Joseph Chandler, 68, of Salem.
The driver of the bus, a 63-year-old Albany resident, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The Salem Police Department is investigating the accident.
