Jefferson County, OR – The person who was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 97 in Jefferson County Sunday afternoon has been identified, according to the Oregon State Police.
Authorities identified the deceased as 51-year-old Aaron Lee Bottorff of La Grande, Oregon.
The fatal collision occurred on Highway 97 near milepost 102 at approximately 4:01 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2026, Oregon State Police reported.
Preliminary investigation findings indicate that a northbound Subaru Forester, driven by Bottorff, crossed into the southbound lane for unknown reasons and collided head-on with a southbound Jeep Cherokee operated by 34-year-old Brayan Gonzalez Celestino of Bend.
Bottorff was pronounced dead at the scene. Gonzalez Celestino reportedly suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The crash impacted Highway 97 for approximately three hours while authorities conducted the on-scene investigation. Oregon State Police were assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Fire, and the Oregon Department of Transportation. The incident remains under investigation.
