Buttonwillow, California (July 25, 2022) – Irving Rodriguez-Barraza, 22, of Wasco, is suspected of DUI in a traffic collision that left a one-year-old child dead in Buttonwillow on Saturday afternoon.

According to CHP, the deadly collision happened just before 4:30 p.m. on July 23, on Shafter Avenue and Burbank Street.

CHP said Rodriguez-Barraza was driving a Dodge Ram east on Burbank Street when he failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection and collided with a Jeep Cherokee that was heading north on Shafter Avenue.

The impact caused the Dodge to strike a stop sign while the Jeep overturned after striking an Almond tree.

The Jeep was carrying the driver, Jesus Tejada Sanchez, 29, and passengers, Joanne Figueroa, 34, and two children aged 1 and 6.

Rodriguez-Barraza and his passenger, Cruz Carrillo Olvera, 48, were taken to Kern Medical for treatment of their injuries.

The occupants of the Jeep were also taken to the hospital, where the one-year-old was pronounced deceased.

CHP said Rodriguez-Barraza is suspected to have been driving while under the influence. The incident is under investigation.
