Irvine maintains its reputation as one of the safest large cities in America, though it faces unique traffic challenges due to its rapid growth and high-volume master-planned arterials. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) 2023 rankings, Irvine ranked 14th out of 15 similar-sized cities for total fatal and injury victims — placing it among the safest in its peer group. The city recorded approximately 700 injury-involved collisions annually, with Jeffrey Road and Irvine Center Drive identified as persistent hotspots for multi-vehicle accidents.
While overall fatalities remain low, preliminary 2024–2025 data indicate that failure to yield (24%) and unsafe speed (19%) are the leading primary crash factors. Notably, while the city excels in motor vehicle safety, it ranks in the worst tier for bicycle-involved injuries, particularly among youth under 15, where it recently ranked 1st out of 15 cities.
