Indio, CA – Two people were injured and a driver was arrested after a collision between two vehicles in Indio early Tuesday morning, according to the Indio Police Department.

The incident took place in the area of Calhoun Street and Avenue 48 shortly after 5 a.m. January 27.

Investigations into the accident found that a 28-year-old man was driving a Lexus when he was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota driven by a 30-year-old man.

The Indio Police Department as well as fire and medical crews responded to the scene and attended to the involved parties.

The driver of the Toyota and a 28-year-old woman riding as a passenger in the Lexus were both transported to Desert Regional Medical Center. The woman was critically injured while the man was said to be in stable condition.

The driver of the Lexus was suspected to have been driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was arrested and booked into the John Benoit Detention Center on drunk driving charges.

Multiple lanes were shut down for over one hour as authorities examined and cleared the scene. All lanes were reopened shortly after 6:30 a.m.

The Indio Police Department is looking into the incident to determine the contributing factors.

In the 2023 California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) crash rankings, Indio reported 257 total victims killed or injured in traffic collisions, placing the city 82nd out of 103 similar-sized cities, indicating a moderately high level of serious crashes compared with peers. Alcohol-involved collisions accounted for 38 victims (54/103), with the 21–34 age group contributing a notable portion. Indio also recorded 18 pedestrian and 18 bicyclist victims (both 67/103), highlighting ongoing risks for vulnerable road users. Speed-related fatal and injury collisions were 21 (97/103) and 30 nighttime collisions (62/103), while hit-and-run incidents numbered 9 (93/103), suggesting persistent traffic safety challenges. Additionally, the city reported 127 DUI arrests in 2023 (37/103), reflecting enforcement efforts aimed at reducing impaired driving.
