Grants Pass, Ore. – A 5-year-old girl was killed Saturday morning following a crash at a parking lot in Grants Pass, according to Grants Pass Police Department.

The accident happened around 11:24 a.m. on March 16 in the parking lot of a business along Fruitdale Drive near Highway 238.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the girl was hit by an unoccupied vehicle.

According to GPPD, the owner of the vehicle, a 74-year-old man, had parked the car and exited it in the parking lot only to realize that the truck was rolling backward. The man quickly attempted to open the door and stop the vehicle from continuing backward but was unable to stop it.

Unfortunately, the truck struck a 5-year-old girl. First responders from the American Medical Response (AMR) transported the injured girl to Three Rivers Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

The 74-year-old man remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The incident remains under investigation.
