Fullerton, CA – A pedestrian was injured Saturday night in a hit-and-run crash in Fullerton, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched shortly before 10:30 p.m. on December 20 to the area of North Gilbert Street and Carol Avenue after receiving reports of a pedestrian down in the roadway, according to the Fullerton Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found the pedestrian lying in the street with injuries. The vehicle involved in the collision had fled the scene before police arrived.

Paramedics transported the injured pedestrian to a local trauma center for treatment. The victim’s condition, age, and identity were not immediately released.

The hit-and-run remains under investigation by Fullerton police.

In 2022, Fullerton recorded a total of 845 victims killed and injured in traffic collisions, resulting in an overall California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) ranking of 36 out of 61 similar-sized cities. The data indicates particular challenges in certain collision categories. For instance, the city ranked 12 out of 61 for pedestrian victims (62 total killed/injured) and 14 out of 61 for alcohol-involved incidents among drivers aged 21-34 (53 total killed/injured). There were 95 total victims in alcohol-involved collisions and 39 victims in motorcycle collisions.  While recent years have seen fluctuations, with a noticeable downturn in overall accidents during the pandemic (2020), the number of pedestrian-involved injury accidents slightly increased from 38 in 2020 to 50 in 2021. The Fullerton Police Department actively works with the OTS through grant funding to support education and enforcement programs, such as DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols, to address these ongoing safety concerns.
