Escondido, CA – William Roth Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on West El Norte Parkway

Escondido, CA – An 86-year-old man who died in a two-vehicle collision at an intersection in Escondido earlier this month has been identified, according to the Escondido Police Department.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased as William John Roth of Escondido.

The fatal accident occurred in the roadway near the 1600 block of South Iris Lane and the 500 block of West El Norte Parkway at approximately 3:39 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

Mr. Roth passed away days later on March 15, 2026, at 9:59 p.m.

The incident involved two vehicles. According to the initial reports, Roth was driving a vehicle that collided with another vehicle within the roadway. The specific directions of travel and the sequence of events leading to the impact have not yet been disclosed by investigators.

While at least one other vehicle was involved, information regarding the identity or condition of the other driver has not been released. No arrests have been reported in connection with the collision.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. Officials are examining whether traffic signals, speed, or other environmental factors contributed to the two-vehicle accident. Medical records noted contributing health conditions for Mr. Roth, though the manner of death was ruled an accident.

Emergency responders and Escondido Police personnel arrived at the scene shortly after receiving 911 calls. Paramedics treated Roth at the site before transporting him to the Palomar Medical Center on Citracado Parkway, where he was eventually pronounced dead.

The collision caused significant traffic delays on West El Norte Parkway as authorities worked to clear the scene and document the evidence. The incident remains under investigation by the Escondido Police Department.

In 2023, San Diego County saw a significant number of traffic-related fatalities, with Escondido specifically reporting 12 deaths and 678 injuries resulting from vehicle collisions, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). National data from the NHTSA indicates that older drivers remain a vulnerable demographic in multi-vehicle accidents, with a continued emphasis on intersection safety to reduce fatal outcomes.
