Elderly Woman Crashes SUV into Mira Mesa Post Office, Multiple People Hurt

According to the San Diego Police Department, the incident took place just before 10:15 a.m. in the 9051 Mira Mesa Boulevard.

San Diego, CA – Multiple people were injured Monday morning after an elderly driver left the roadway and slammed into a post office in San Diego’s Mira Mesa area.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the incident took place just before 10:15 a.m. in the 9051 Mira Mesa Boulevard.

Authorities said an 81-year-old woman was driving a white Toyota RAV4 when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the lobby of the post office located at the block.

Paramedics responded to the scene and found multiple people who were inside the post office with minor injuries. At least one of them was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

The condition of the driver remained unknown.

The post office was temporarily closed following the accident. People who needed to go the post office were advised to instead go to the post office locations at 9245 Twin Trails Drive or 11251 Rancho Carmel Drive.

According to the California Office of Public Safety, in 2022, San Diego city experienced a significant number of traffic collisions, resulting in a total of 119 fatal accidents and 124 deaths within city limits. These numbers accounted for 43 percent of all fatal collisions within San Diego County that year, highlighting the city as a high-risk area. The broader San Diego County saw over 12,800 reported crashes in 2022, resulting in more than 17,000 injuries and approximately 285 fatalities.  Pedestrians and cyclists remained particularly vulnerable road users. In San Diego County, there were nearly 1,000 pedestrian-involved crashes and over 700 bicycle-involved collisions, with urban areas identified as especially hazardous due to heavy foot traffic. Statewide, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) noted that traffic fatalities overall were unacceptably high, with a projected 4,400 people killed on California roads in 2022.
