Cruz Olvera Hurt in Fatal Buttonwillow Crash on Shafter Avenue and Burbank Street

Buttonwillow, California (July 25, 2022) – Cruz Carrillo Olvera, 48,  was among five people injured in a deadly traffic collision that occurred Saturday afternoon in Buttonwillow, according to a CHP report.

Olvera was a passenger in a Dodge Ram driven by Irving Rodriguez-Barraza, 22, of Wasco, who was suspected of DUI.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. on July 23, Rodriguez-Barraza was driving eastbound on Burbank Street when he failed to stop for a stop sign at Shafter Avenue and crashed into a Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound.

The Dodge collided with a stop sign while the Jeep struck an almond tree and overturned.

Both occupants of the Dodge were transported to Kern Medical for treatment of their injuries.

The driver of the Jeep, Jesus Tejada Sanchez, 29, and his passengers, Joanne Figueroa, 34, and two children aged 6 and 1, were also taken to Kern Medical, where the younger child sadly died.

Rodriguez-Barraza is believed to have been driving while under the influence at the time of the accident. 

The CHP is investigating the deadly crash.
