Traffic crashes continue to be a major public safety issue in Mohave County, with an average of six deaths per year recorded from 2021 through 2023. The problem peaked in 2023, marking the deadliest year in that period, when traffic accidents claimed 8 lives. According to figures released by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC), many of these deadly crashes took place on state routes highways. SR 20, in particular, stands out as one of the county’s most dangerous roads. Several factors contribute to the elevated risk on these highways. Sharp roadway curves combined with dense traffic volumes, especially the regular presence of semi-trucks, create challenging driving conditions. These elements often encourage unsafe passing attempts, increasing the risk of head-on collisions. Beyond infrastructure and traffic patterns, common causes of fatal crashes include speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and improper passing. Drivers are urged to remain vigilant and cautious, especially when navigating high-risk corridors like SR 20, as heightened awareness can significantly reduce the likelihood of a serious or fatal accident.
