Columbia County, OR – One person was killed after a single-vehicle crash late Monday night on Highway 47 near milepost 58, according to the Oregon State Police.

The crash occurred on Highway 47 at approximately 11:42 p.m. on December 15, 2025, when Oregon State Police responded to reports of a vehicle that had left the roadway.

Preliminary investigation indicates that 60-year-old Todd Alan McCarthy of Vernonia, was driving a Dodge Ram southbound, when for some reason, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole and several trees, and came to rest off the roadway.

Todd McCarthy was declared deceased at the scene. No other vehicles or occupants were involved, and no arrests were reported.

At this time, the cause of the crash remains under investigation, with authorities working to determine why the vehicle left the roadway prior to the fatal impact.

Emergency responders from the Oregon State Police were assisted by the Vernonia Police Department, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Vernonia Fire Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation, who secured the scene and conducted the on-scene investigation.

The crash impacted traffic on Highway 47 for approximately six hours, as lanes were restricted during investigation and cleanup efforts, causing delays for motorists traveling through the area.

The fatal Columbia County-crash remains under investigation by Oregon State Police, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.
