Coalinga, CA – The Fresno County Coroner’s Office has identified a Las Vegas man who was killed in a traffic collision over the weekend near Coalinga.
Steven Robertson, 49, died in the crash that was reported at around 3 a.m. March 22, on Interstate 5 at Highway 33.
According to investigators, Robertson was behind the wheel of a gray Nissan Versa traveling south on Interstate 5 when, for unknown reasons, he swerved into the shoulder and crashed into the back of a white Toyota Prius. The Toyota, driven by a 41-year-old Los Angeles resident, was stopped on the right shoulder of the highway with their hazard lights on.
After the crash, the Nissan spun and came to a rest facing the wrong way on I-5. A few minutes later, the Nissan was struck by a black Toyota Sienna driven by a 34-year-old Sacramento resident.
Emergency responders declared Robertson dead the site of the collision. There was no update on the other motorists involved.
Authorities have not specified whether impairment played any role in the collision.
The exact cause of the crash is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
Fresno County continues to see a high number of traffic crashes and fatalities each year, with the California Highway Patrol reporting over 5,100 crashes in the county in 2023, including nearly 1,200 injury collisions.
